Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands on method of evaluating and enhancing the craniosacral system. The craniosacral system is a physiological system within the body, which maintains the environment in which the Central Nervous System functions. The craniosacral system is made up of the structures that support and protect the brain and the spinal cord, namely the membranes, the cerebrospinal fluid and the bones surrounding them.

The craniosacral system is similar to the cardiovascular system in that both systems have a rhythm that can be gently palpated and assessed to determine the vitality and mobility of that system. In the cardiovascular system it is called a pulse, in the craniosacral system it is referred to as the craniosacral rhythm. In optimum health the craniosacral rhythm should move freely and symmetrically, however injuries, disease, muscular strain and stress can disrupt the rhythm both locally and throughout the body via the connective tissue. A skilled practioner is able to palpate, using a touch as light as 5 grams, if there are any areas of obstruction or disruption in the rhythm.

Once the source has been located, the practioner can assist the natural movement of the fluid and connective tissue to help the body self-correct. Sometimes that simple action is all that is required to restore the rhythm, other times complimentary therapies may be combined with the cranio to help the body return to its fully functioning state.

CST also has emotional benefits. It has been shown to be effective in alleviating the symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as assist in the recovery from trauma of all kinds. Victims of assault and other severe traumatic experiences treated with CST have obtained relief through the release of muscle tension that encapsulates the emotions and memories in the tissue of the craniosacral system.

By complementing the body’s natural healing processes, CST is increasingly being used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.
